Washington DC's Ward 7 Councilman Vincent Gray and Mark Meadows from Capital One will be keynote speakers at Hoop Dreams Monthly Mentoring Workshop this Saturday, March 4th

Thank you Maxine Baker and Toni Williams of the Freddie Mac Foundation for joining us at the February Mentoring Workshop.

Please join us this Saturday, March 4th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm for our Monthly Mentoring Workshop. Our guest speakers will be Vincent Gray and Mark Meadows. Councilman Gray will kick-off the session speaking at 1:00 pm.

District of Columbia Councilman Vincent Gray has a solid reputation for being a champion for youth and their families. Gray's career in the area of social services for urban communities spans over 25 years. He was sworn-in as a member of the Council on January 2, 2005. He is a member of the Council's Committees on Health; Economic Development; Human Services; and Education, Libraries and Recreation. Chairman Cropp has also appointed him to Chair a Special Committee on Prevention of Youth Violence.

Mr. Gray is the recipient of numerous honors, awards, and citations, including the Mayor's Distinguished Public Service Award and the United Way Outstanding Service to the Community Award. He attended undergraduate and graduate school at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Mark Meadows of Capitol One serves as Human Resources Director - Client Consultant and provides human resources consulting to senior management as the US Credit Card business changes to a new core infrastructure. Prior to this consulting role, Mr. Meadows was an Executive Recruiter, based in the McLean, VA headquarters of Capital One. His clients included a broad range of departments including corporate development, strategy, finance and banking.

Meadows graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, ME, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He is currently an Organization Development Master's degree candidate at the American University in Washington, D.C.

Capital One is a longstanding supporter of the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, having offered both financial resources and great volunteers to participate in financial planning workshops for Hoop Dreams students. A huge thank you to Capital One for their generous support.

The Mentoring Workshop will be held at the Elliott School at The George Washington University - 1957 E Street NW. Start time is 1:00 pm. Please join us to see our Hoop Dreams students and mentors in action!

8th Annual Congressional Reception to be held Thursday, May 11 in The United States Capitol

Thursday, May 11th Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, a longtime friend of Hoop Dreams, and many of his distinguished colleagues from the House and Senate, will host the 8th Annual Hoop Dreams Congressional Reception sponsored by Morgan Stanley, Lockheed Martin and other event sponsors to be announced in the Mansfield Room of the U.S. Capitol Building, directly off of the Senate floor.

At this exciting annual event all of the communities involved with Hoop Dreams are represented, including current and former Hoop Dreams students, Members of Congress, Hoop Dreams sponsors, volunteers, Board Members, and others. The occasion allows students to see that they can connect with the political world and its personalities. At the same time, Members of Congress, Hill staff, business leaders, and young professionals are reminded that Washington DC, like many other urban cities still has a number of disadvantaged youth that do not enjoy the resources and access they deserve and it is up to an entire community to recommit themselves to advocating on their behalf.

For more information regarding the Congressional and event sponsorship please contact Clarence J. Fluker at cjfluker@hoopdreams.org.

The Junkies team up with Maryland Nighthawks and Hard Times Cafe to Support Hoop Dreams

During halftime at the February 18th Maryland Nighthawks game, two of the Junkies from 106.7/WJFK FM, John "Cakes" Auville and J.P. "JP" Flaim shot 13 foul shots to raise $1,300 for the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. The money was a donation from Tom Doyle and the Maryland Nighthawks.

The Junkies have also teamed up with the Northern Virginia based Hard Times Cafe chain of restaurants to promote and sell selected t-shirts during the month of March at all Hard Times Cafe locations with proceeds benefiting the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. The Junkies will be promoting the shirts on their morning radio show as well as doing two restaurant appearances. For more information on The Junkies and appearances click here, and for a listing of Hard Times Cafe locations, click here.
