Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund Career
Preparation:
Internship Component
High School Internships
Purpose: Hoop Dreams Scholarship
Fund (HDSF) high school internships are intended to expose our
students to a professional business environment.
The internship requires a modest commitment of time and resources
on the part of the internship provider. Your commitment will
provide an HDSF student with valuable work experience that will
prepare him or her for life beyond high school. We suggest the
following guidelines:
| Duration of Employment: four, six or
eight week terms to be decided by the internship provider. |
| Work Schedule: may include two, three
or four days per week, three hours each day, for example. |
| Hours: Students could arrive at a
metro accessible workplace by 2:30pm during the weekday. |
| Rate of Pay: We suggest $8.00 per
hour. The DC minimum wage is $7.55 per hour. |
| Example #1: A six week internship of
four days per week would only cost $576. |
| Example #2: An eight week internship
of four days per week would only cost $768. |
You will be provided an HDSF staff member
who will serve as a liaison between your company and HDSF. The
HDSF staff member will be available to discuss the student's
performance within the workplace, and will communicate with the
student's supervisor on a regular basis.
College Internships
Purpose: HDSF College Internships
help provide our alumni students with vital career and
professional experience before they graduate college and enter the
workforce as full-time employees. An HDSF staff member will work
with internship providers to help place college students in
internships that compliment their respective majors or career
goals. We suggest the following possibilities:
Summer Internships:
| Duration of employment: eight to ten
weeks, from late May to mid-August. |
| Work schedule: Full or part-time. |
Winter/ Holiday Break Internships:
| Duration of employment: Three to four
weeks typically from mid-December to mid-January. |
| Work schedule: Full or part time. |
Internships for students attending a
college or university in the local metropolitan area:
| Duration of employment: Three to four
months - roughly the equivalent of one college semester. |
| Typical Fall Semester: Late August to
mid-December. |
| Typical Spring Semester: Mid January
to late May. |
| Work schedule: 20-25 hours per week.
Hours may vary depending on the student's class schedule. |
You will be provided an HDSF staff member
who will serve as a liaison between your company and HDSF. The
HDSF staff member will be available to discuss the student's
performance within the workplace, and will communicate with the
